Objective To explore the mediating role of self-consistency and congruence between college students" physical satisfaction and appearance anxiety, and consider the moderating role of gender, so as to provide theoretical basis for the intervention of college students" appearance anxiety. Methods 1007 college students were tested with the Appearance Anxiety Scale, Appearance Satisfaction Scale and Self-consistency and congruence Scale. Results (1) The difference of appearance anxiety level among college students of different genders was statistically significant (P<0.001); (2) There is a correlation between physical satisfaction, self-consistency and congruence and appearance anxiety; (3) Physical satisfaction negatively predicts appearance anxiety (β= -0.61, P<0.001), while self-consistency and congruence positively predicts appearance anxiety (β= 0.28, P<0.001). The mediating effect of self-consistency and congruence between physical satisfaction and appearance anxiety is statistically significant (β= -0.08, P< 0.001); (4) Gender has a moderating effect on physical satisfaction, self-consistency and congruence and appearance anxiety (β= -0.16, P< 0.05; β= -0.12, P<0.05). Conclusion (1) Physical satisfaction can positively predict appearance anxiety, and it can also predict appearance anxiety through the mediation of self-consistency and congruence; (2) Gender has a moderating effect on physical satisfaction, appearance anxiety and self-consistency and congruence. |
